Knowledge Platform on Water for Development
What is VIA Water?
VIA Water is a programme that aims to identify innovative solutions for water problems facing cities in seven African countries: Benin, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda and South Sudan. These countries are priorities within Dutch overseas development policy. After consultations with the water sector, the original Knowlegde Platform Water for Development was transferred into a valorisation- and innovation programme.
VIA Water wants to bring smart water innovations to life and encourages people to join forces with other bright sparks from different backgrounds to enhance it and share it within the VIA Water community. If needed, we will also provide innovators with some (financial) support.
VIA Water consists of a programme office that is part of the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in Delft, the Netherlands. The fund available for small-scale innovations will be managed by fund manager Aqua for All. The programme was commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs as one of five knowledge platforms for each key priority in Dutch overseas development policy.
What does VIA Water offer?
By being a part of the VIA Water community through social media, the website and at live events, participants will encounter other people working on the subject of water and cities in Africa, or who wish to do so. As part of that community, they can enrich their ideas, share and discover tips and new tricks, identify partners and explore the subject further by consulting background literature.
VIA Water, and more particularly, fund manager Aqua for All can help to develop ideas and find other partners for innovators. Very soon, we will be organising a how-to session, where you can find out how to submit your proposal.
Funding is available to finance small-scale innovations. These also include social innovations. We believe it is important for ideas to be developed in a process of co-creation with the partners from the seven VIA Water countries. Ideas need not necessarily come from the Netherlands, but ideally come from African countries.
Who are we looking for?
VIA Water puts as few restrictions on the programme as possible: everyone is welcome. We are looking for partners who have innovative solutions for water issues in Africa. We also welcome experts who have solved a completely different problem and would like to explore whether their idea also works in the water sector. In a nutshell, we are in search of people who enjoy looking at old problems in a new way and would like to share their innovative knowledge with others.
What we ask for in exchange is a willingness to share your knowledge and ideas and receive feedback about them. Participants should therefore be prepared to be able to learn from their mistakes for future innovations.
You are warmly invited to contribute your ideas to VIA Water. You can find us on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, via email and on our website, but you can also contact us in person, either by telephoning or by visiting us.
